Face weight, pile height, and backing quality all affect how turf performs, but in Arizona specifically, heat performance is the factor that matters most and gets talked about least. Cheaper turf products use denser, darker synthetic fibers that absorb more heat and can become genuinely painful to walk on barefoot by mid-morning in summer. The turf we install uses lighter-colored, UV-stabilized fibers and often a cooling infill designed specifically to reduce surface temperature — a real difference if the turf area is meant to actually get used, not just looked at.
Backing quality affects drainage and lifespan more than most people realize. A well-made turf backing with adequate perforation lets water — and, for pet owners, urine — drain quickly rather than pooling or causing odor buildup. Combined with a properly built base (typically a compacted decomposed granite layer with a geotextile fabric underneath to prevent weed growth), good turf can handle years of daily use, pets, and monsoon downpours without issue.
The Installation Process
Turf installation starts with removing existing grass, weeds, or rock to a depth of a few inches, then excavating and compacting a base layer — usually decomposed granite or a similar aggregate — that's graded for proper drainage. A weed barrier fabric goes down next, followed by the turf itself, which we cut, seam, and secure along the perimeter. Infill is brushed in last to help the blades stand upright and add stability underfoot. Most residential turf projects are completed in 1 to 3 days, depending on square footage and site complexity.

A quality putting green uses a shorter, denser turf pile specifically engineered for ball roll, along with a built-in slope or contour if you want breaks built into the green rather than a flat surface.
